Course Description

English 100 is a college level course in composition designed to develop reading, critical thinking, and writing strategies necessary for academic success. The emphasis is on reading and writing expository essays. The course includes research and documentation skills. (CSU) (UC Credit Limitation) (Degree Credit)

Our course readings invite you not just to talk about culture, but to examine the different analytic frameworks and assumptions that various authors and we ourselves bring to the study of culture. At times these authors will guide our inquiry into everyday life, but you will also develop your own analysis and arguments. Analysis requires that we go beyond what other people think and develop our own thoughts. Thus, the analytic writing we will focus on requires that we build on the ideas of other authors to explain our own original thinking to the reader.
